This composition marks the sixty-third destination in the series Ragtime at the Red-Light District. Set in Bergen’s historic Strandgaten, the piece celebrates the boldness of reinvention and the power of music to uplift and unite.
The protagonist is a 32-year-old cabaret singer whose journey has been anything but conventional. After battling drug addiction and enduring the sting of stereotypes, she emerged with resilience and brilliance. Over the past 36 months, she honed her craft, earning multiple accolades—including a fourth album that held diamond certification for an astonishing 16 consecutive weeks. Her success wasn’t just personal—it became a beacon. And so, she set her sights on Bergen, Norway, determined to share her gift with others.
For 16 days, she transformed the city with song. She harmonized with panhandlers at Flesland Airport, serenaded a newly engaged couple aboard the Fløybanen funicular, and even paused her hectic schedule to sing at services inside St. Mary’s Church. There, a parishioner—who happened to be a talent scout—was so moved that he invited her to perform Norway’s national anthem at an SK Brann Eliteserien match at Brann Stadion. The original singer had fallen ill, becoming patient zero for the “Fjord Flu.”
Her rendition electrified the sellout crowd, a moment of national pride and personal triumph. Afterward, she embarked on a vigorous power walk that led her to Strandgaten. There, she noticed a group of working-class women who appeared lost and disheartened. A local informed her that these women, aspiring musicians themselves, were trapped in exploitative conditions under oppressive bar owners.
When one owner began to accost the women, the cabaret singer intervened with fearless resolve. She declared their resignation and delivered a swift elbow that reportedly dislodged two wisdom teeth. She then escorted the women to a respected local resident—known for humility and class—who offered them shelter and support. That evening, the singer filled the air with melodies of hope, inspiring the women to begin anew.
Musically, the piece follows a 4AA4BBCC8A' structure. It draws from Aqua’s Barbie Girl, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 No. 2, and Mozart’s Viennese Sonatina No. 2 in A major. The homage to Aqua is intentional—Norway’s pop legacy and the nostalgic pull of 1990s culture, especially during the isolation of the 2020 pandemic, served as a catalyst for this composition. The goal was not to replicate a pop song, but to elevate its melodic essence into something powerful and grown-up.
The A section, a 24-bar passage, is rooted in C-sharp minor and later evolves with a rich harmonic sequence: E major 7, C-sharp 7, F-sharp minor 7, B major, G-sharp major, F-sharp major, A major, B major, and finally C-sharp minor (natural). The B section, written in A-sharp minor rather than B-flat minor, introduces a darker, more introspective tone. The C section expands the emotional palette, while the final A' section reinterprets the opening theme with renewed strength and clarity.
This is not just a melody. It is a torch song in syncopation, a hymn to reinvention and solidarity. The traveler remains unnamed, but the pioneering soul is yours to feel.
